Is Organic Really Better?

Posted in Education on February 27th, 2009

In our greener society, much has been made of eating organically. Every aisle in the supermarket now has organic offerings, from organic crackers to Natural Beef, we are constantly bombarded with the idea that eating organically is better for us and for our families. But what is the real skinny on eating organically? Can it really benefit us or are we just paying more for fancy packaging and clever advertising?

First of all, you may have noticed that organic foods may cost a little more than your general groceries. This is our first clue on the quality of foods. Organic foods are higher in price because for farmers, they cost more to grow pesticide free than otherwise. In general, they have stricter handling practices which account for their slightly higher price. But this also guarantees that you are getting a quality food product that has been grown and manufactured under stricter standards to earn it the “organic” label. If quality is important to you, it may be worth the extra money to eat Natural Beef and organically grown carrots.

While organic growing is not yet an exact science, you can rest assured that organic products are good for you and your family, as they cut back on the chemicals and processing typically used to product food. It is well worth the money to support those who are striving for excellence in food production and worth it for a healthier family.

Jewish Guidelines for Modesty

Posted in Medical on February 24th, 2009

They way we dress, look and carry ourselves are the first things people notice about us. Jewish law dictates care and modesty in every day dress, as your clothes present much about who you are and what you stand for. Here are some basic modesty guidelines for women of the Jewish faith to follow and teach their eternal Jewish family about.

Skirts should fall to 4 inches above the knee, and styles such as skirts that feature slits or wraparound styles should not be worn. The most acceptable type of skirt is an a-line that doesn’t allow any gaping.

Shirts should be conservative and the sleeves should fall to three quarters length and no shorter. You may be permitted to wearing short sleeves, as long as they fall three inches from the shoulder.

Necklines should be modest and not show the collarbone. Again, you may be permitted to wear shirts that expose three inches below the neckline, but other wise should not show any more of the chest.

Clothes should be loose and comfortable, with no tight fitting or sheer fabrics. A faithful Jew should consciously dress modestly no matter where she is; whether it is at synagogue or on vacation, the rules for modesty are the same. She should be an example to her eternal Jewish family by dressing modestly because she wants to.

Researching for your New Job

Posted in Education on February 21st, 2009

Too often those who are going for a job interview at a new company fail to do sufficient research about the company before heading in to talk about a potential job. After searching for resume examples and getting your foot in the door, you don’t want to blow the shot by seeming uneducated about the new opportunity. Do your research so that your interviewer can be impressed by your knowledge of the company and that your interview is as impressive as your resume examples.

Know the general mission of the company. Each company has a mission statement or a general idea of what they want to accomplish. Research what that mission is, and be prepared with an idea of what you can do to facilitate that mission if you are hired to the company. You want to show that you will be a good and productive fit for the already existing team with the company.

Know how the company is structured. Is it owned by a larger company? Does it have a few sister companies that you’ll be involved with? You’ll want to know the general structure of the company so that you can know how your position there will be received and who you’ll be working with. You can simply search online to see what their business ties are and keep abreast of their relationships.

Know the customers that they service. You can demonstrate the knowledge of the companies they work with as well as the services you offer and further impress your interviewer.

What not to do on Your Cover Letter

Posted in Medical on February 20th, 2009

Cover letters are so important because they are the first impression that a potential employer has of you. You could have the most impressive resume in the world, yet not ever have it read because of an unimpressive cover letter. There are mistakes that many people make in creating a cover letter that could turn an employer away before he or she even sees the resume.

Many people use a “To Whom it May Concern” or other ambiguous header as the salutation. Find out whom you are sending the cover letter and resume to. It may take an extra minute of research, but it will go a long way in personalizing the letter so that the employer takes time to read it.

Make sure that you know what the employer is looking for in an employee, and personalize your cover letter to those requirements. Don’t send a generic cover letter out with all of your resumes. Cover letters should be tailored to the job that you want, as a blurb about you and what you can do for the company.

Look online for resume writing examples to help you decide what should be put in a cover letter. Make sure it has all the correct contact information and is an inviting picture as you as an employee in order to facilitate a call back for an interview.

Full Spectrum Bulbs For a Better Mood

Posted in Medical on February 18th, 2009

In the winter, I hate how much time that I spend inside the house. It seems like the short days and the cold weather drain my energy. I don’t get depressed but I’m also not as energetic and happy as I am during the spring and summer. One of my friends suggested that I try switching some of our lamps, especially the one where I sit and read (my favorite winter occupation), to full spectrum bulbs.
