Peace of Mind in Moving

Posted in Education on May 21st, 2009

Moving from one home to another has got to be one of the major stresses we have to deal with in life. Trying to fit your accumulated life into boxes, lift heavy furniture, fit it into a truck, and then do it all over again in a new place is nothing short of exhausting.

I’ve experience this firsthand recently. A year ago I moved out of my old apartment into a townhouse with a year contract. Before I knew it, the year was already up and it was time to move again. I stressed over finding boxes, going through all the accumulated junk, throwing unneeded items away, and lifting and organizing heavy items. The biggest struggle was finding someone to help move me with enough space in a trailer to carry all my belongings.

For me it’s not so bad. I’m young and I haven’t accumulated all that much stuff. But I can only imagine what it must be like for an older adult or senior to have to repeat the same process. A lifetime of belongings would have to be packed away. With an aging body, it would be much harder to bend, pack, and carry all of the heavy items necessary. For a senior, the stress level caused by moving must go up ten fold. That’s why I was relieved to find out recently that there are senior moving services available. Senior moving services specialize in helping older adults and seniors manage and coordinate all the logistics involved in a move: organizing moving companies, documenting inventory, and supervising packing. It’s nice to know there are people out there who can care for the needs of seniors, even when it comes to moving.

Turning Chaos Into Magical Memories

Destination and event management companies are exceptional at hosting a wide range of events and as I travel I have found that Baltimore may just have the best destination management company anywhere.

Once upon a time I worked in the marketing department of the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. I was over the advertising of the hotels showroom facility and prepared sales materials for the staff to sell the showroom for events, parties, product launches and corporate events. It was the responsibility of the sales staff to coordinate all of the venues events including menu creation, seating arrangements for dinner, booking entertainment, providing concierge service, staffing the event with waiters, models or whatever was needed and them making themselves available to ensure the success of the event.

I watched as the team put on one event after another. The launch party of an IPO from a corporate sponsor, a private party with special guest performer Snoop Doggy Dog, conventioneers launching new products at CES and COMDEX, the team brought everything together without a hitch, but behind the scenes they ran frantically from one task to the next, making incalculable phone calls and checking on every detail then reporting their progress to the event sponsor.

I admired their dedication to each client they serviced and I admire an industry that brings a variety of elements together to entertain, excite and celebrate the accomplishments of others. I have seen what happens behind the scenes and I and grateful that there is a destination management company in Annapolis that takes my headache out of putting on an event.

Doormat Debate: Important First Impression Or Simple Cleaning Feature?

Posted in Home on May 20th, 2009

First impressions are important in everything from forming personal relationships to trying to impress in business situations, whether it’s a one-on-one job interview or power breakfast meeting. Real estate professionals are constantly telling home sellers that the first impression, starting at the curb appeal of their home, can not only make or break a sale but even determine whether a potential buyer views the property at all. After the curb comes the front door and the first thing you see when your open the door is the doormat.

One of the easiest and most cost effective improvements you’ll make to your home, whether you’re thinking of selling or not, is the purchase of an exclusive, top quality entry mat. Look for one from a home couture dealer that stocks woven doormats with a variety of designs, colors and patterns from which to choose. Measure your door and the entryway to ensure the fit is suitable, especially if you have a special feature like a double door that you may wish to accentuate.

It’s not only looks that matter: you’ll want to buy a carpet that is stain and mold resistant, so look for something called polypropylene fiber. And because looks to matter, make sure the door mat is trimmed along all four sides with a serged edging. Another pointer to remember is that you don’t really want a pad for the doormat as you do with wall-to-wall or large area carpets, so buy an entry mat that has a non-slip backing and that does not damage hardwood or tile floors.

Employee Weight Loss Programs Trim Healthcare Expenditures.

Posted in Education on May 17th, 2009

Shortly after we were married, my wife started working in the human resource department for an insurance benefits provider. Each year the company held an employee health fair and sponsored employee weight loss programs as part of the employee fitness program. As an insurance provider the company understood the importance of reducing health care covered expenses by encouraging workers to get in shape and maintain healthy bodies. Incentives were given to the employees that participated in the activities sponsored by the company. Some people were inspired by the employee weight loss programs without any other motivation to lose weight, as the company provided trainers that would work with individuals to establish dietary outlines and workout plans to facilitate a healthier lifestyle. Others were inspired by the thought of receiving paid time off for participating in the fitness program. While some people would participate for the prizes that the company put up for successful completion of an employee weight loss programs goals. Whatever the personal motivation behind each persons commitment to the tailored employee weight loss programs goals the overall outcome was an overall healthier organization and a reduced cost in paid out medical expenses for the company, saving the organization tens of thousands of dollars a year in medical insurance payouts.

Employee weight loss programs are gaining in popularity across the country as insurance providers and corporations are realizing the cost to benefit savings on mounting healthcare claims and the increases in productivity of employees that are physically fit. Another benefit to employee weight loss programs is that a healthy employee is a happier employee with a higher self esteem and when someone is confident, the amount and quality of their work increases.

Photos of Another Time

Posted in Education on May 15th, 2009

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. That must be what they meant when you capture a glimpse of a photo that for one reason or another, you become frozen or locked in time as your gaze upon it turns into a stare. You then begin not only to look, but to feel. Memories or perhaps fantasies step into your grasp, surrounding you with their presence. Yes, I think that is what they might have meant.

Have you ever looked at a photo you have never seen before but yet it captures you and takes you into its world as if you have already been there once? It’s fascinating how a simple image can do that to the human mind. I admit that happened to me as I browsed old New York City photos by Bill White. I looked at photos of Grand Central Station in the 1940’s and although I did not live through that time period, I could almost sense what it was like, how the people talked and dressed, and how I would have looked if it were me in that photo.

Bill White photographs the places of a historic New York City as well as the faces and moments in time. His photos can never be replaced because pre World War II photos of New York City can no longer be taken. In his photography, Bill White captures the rich culture of what once was. His photos are remarkable when compared to the modern day images in our minds. From the infamous Empire State building to the Altman Fashion Show and Grand Central Station, Bill White’s intriguing photos are sure to take you into a time you can’t experience anymore. Sit back, gaze, imagine and be inspired.

The Safe Transfer of Money

Posted in Education on May 11th, 2009

Banks, post offices, and retailers all have to make sure they keep accurate accounting records for every dime that passes through their system. They also have to safely transfer that money from the place of work to a location with a better safe and security system. The money is most vulnerable when it’s being transferred but there are a few products that can be used to keep the money safe, even when it’s in transit.

First of all, the money should go directly from the drawer into bank bags. This may sound silly, but you don’t want people to see how much money is out of the safe, and you don’t want it to go into a bag that can be mistaken for anything other than a bank bag. These bags are meant only for money and by using them you prevent the possible mistake of misplacing the money.

Now, bank bags are great for transferring money in store. Consider using a vinyl bank bag, they’ll last longer. When you’re transferring money out of store you’ll want to use something a little more secure. There are many different types of money transfer bags available. What you need to look for are bags that have tamper-evident seals and bags that meet the standards of the Federal Reserve Bank. Before the money leaves the first location make sure you count it and recount it and when it gets to the new location it’s not a bad idea to count it again.

You can never be too careful when transferring your money. Counting and recounting and shipping in the proper bags can help keep the money safe. It’s easier to be cautious than it is to deal with a robbery, so be cautious.
