It’s Great Living so Close to Thanksgiving Point

Posted in Advertising and Marketing on December 31st, 2009

We have lived a mile away from Thanksgiving Point for several years now, however it was only this last summer that we bought a pass to Thanksgiving Point.  Some neighbors of ours relayed how great it was and recommended it to anyone.  We thought it sounded like a great idea and thought we would try it out this year.

In the few short months that we have had it, we have certainly gotten our money’s worth and beyond.  We will be buying a family pass every year moving forward for sure.  The three main attractions are the dinosaur museum, the gardens, and the petting zoo.

Their petting zoo is called Farm Country.  When you come in the entrance, there is a variety of educational displays about farming.  For example there are typically eggs being warmed in an incubator and newly born chickens in a window next door.  There is also a model cow that you can pretend to milk, followed by a replica of one of the milk jug filling machines you might find at a dairy.  There are all types of farm animals from cows and horses, to chickens, rabbits, pigs, goats, and much, much more.

The dinosaur museum boasts being the largest dinosaur museum in the world.  One of my favorite things there is a replica of a supersaurus dinosaur that is about 180 feet long.  It is just amazing to me to imagine seeing one of these creatures in real life.  As a result of the museum, my four year old daughter has asked us some very intelligent questions.  If you haven’t been, you should check it out.

The Difference A Window Makes

Posted in Home and Garden on December 26th, 2009

Recently my husband and I moved into one of the basement apartments of a four-plex.  The apartment complex was completed sometime in the 1970s and it had the windows to prove it.  The frames were made of old bent and damaged aluminum.  One of the single panes of glass in the kitchen must have been broken because it had been replaced with a sheet of plastic.  There were visible holes between the window frame and the wall, which allowed bugs and spiders easy access to our apartment, not to mention the heat and the cold.  The windows were awful.  My husband decided enough was enough and convinced our landlord to replace all the windows in the complex.  This summer all the old frames were torn out and replaced with vinyl window frames with double-paned windows.  Since then we’ve noticed a huge difference in the energy efficiency of our apartment, not to mention the noise reduction.  We never realized how noisy it was outside until the new windows were installed.  Now it is quiet and during the summer we rarely had to turn on the air conditioner.

If you are in a similar predicament, stuck with old inefficient aluminum windows, it’s time to get them replaced.  You will be amazed at how much energy you save by simply replacing old outdated windows.  If you live in the Washington D.C. area and would like replacement windows, Ameritech Construction can help.  With over twenty-five years of experience, the pros at Ameritech Construction know everything there is to know about replacement windows in Washington D.C.   They will get rid of your old inefficient frames and help you increase your energy efficiency and noise reduction with energy efficient windows.

The Source of a Home’s Energy Loss

Posted in Building and Remodeling on December 25th, 2009

One of the most effective ways to make your older home more energy efficient doesn’t involve alternate power sources, new energy efficient appliances, or conserving electricity.  The best way to make your home more energy efficient is to update your windows.  If your home still has old single pane aluminum windows, you could be losing most of the heat or cold generated by your furnace or air conditioner.  The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that windows are responsible for 25% of energy loss in a home.  Replacing your old aluminum single pane windows with vinyl double pane windows can be one of the best ways to save energy.

Replacement windows also can help in an area you may not have thought about.  Most of the noise coming in from outside will be eliminated once you upgrade to a double-paned window.  A double-paned window is different from a single pane in that it is constructed of two panes of glass separated by air or a nontoxic gas like argon.  You’ll be surprised when you realize just how noisy your neighborhood is once your replacement window blocks out incoming sound.

If you are a Maryland resident looking to improve your home’s efficiency by replacing your old windows, Ameritech Construction Corporation can help.  Founded in 1981, Ameritech Construction Corp has been specializing in outdoor home improvement for the D.C. Metro area for nearly thirty years.  Whether you are looking for bay, box, bow, picture, casement, or sliders, Ameritech Construction Corp is your expert in Maryland replacement windows.

A Way to Avoid the Complete Replacement of Your Carpet

Posted in Home and Garden on December 22nd, 2009

I love having good carpet in my home.  For me it can make or break a home.  It is also a very sad day when carpet gets damaged because it can be so expensive to replace.  If you think about it, carpet is pretty impressive stuff.  We put it on our floors, walk on it, slide furniture across it, spill things on it, and the only bath it gets is once a year.  In the mean time, we might run a vacuum across it each week.  When we do clean our carpets, we spray and suck up the spray, so it is really just a surface clean.  All of this and when we get a bad stain, we get upset.

Well, there are ways I have come across that you can use to repair your carpet, instead of needing to replace the entire rug.  If you are not a do it yourself kind of person, many of the Orange County carpet installation companies offer repair services.

If a simple trimming of the fibers will not do the trick, here is one idea that is a little more intense, but rewarding in the end.  It is a replacement of the fibers.  Where the carpet is damaged, remove each damaged carpet fiber all the way down to the carpet backing.  Then find a scrap of carpet, or a hidden area of carpet that won’t miss the fibers, and pull them out to use as replacements.  Carefully glue each fiber into the carpet backing where the damage was originally done.  This process is not for the faint of heart, but if done carefully, will save you some money.

Recommendations for Securing Your Home

Posted in Home Security on December 18th, 2009

There are several things you can do to make your home more secure.  Many homes get broken into because of the carelessness of the owners.  Maybe it is a warm day so the windows are left open or the door is open wide.  When we close the windows, we need to make sure we lock them every time.  This needs to be a habit.

When burglars don’t have an open window or door to enter, they will commonly kick in the door.  Your door itself is probably strong enough, but the frame that the door is bolted to probably is not.  For typically ten dollars or less you can buy a metal plate to secure the part of the frame the door bolts too.

If some of your windows are a concern, there are a few options.  The most secure option is to bolt iron bars over them.  You can also buy a plastic film made for windows that helps prevent them from breaking when hit.

Take a look at your landscaping and ask yourself if it would help or hinder a burglar.  Will it give them a hiding spot, or does it make being sneaky difficult.  Gravel can be quite noisy to walk through.

Finally, to make your home extra secure, install Q-see security cameras around the perimeter of your home, as well as in the entrance point of your home.  This will deter criminals to begin with, but will obviously help you catch those that break in.  Now days you can have your security system connected to your cell phone so you can have surveillance from your phone, or receive a phone call when the alarm is triggered.

The Importance of a Working Garage

Posted in Home and Garden on December 17th, 2009

It’s within our nature to keep all our valuables safe. Paranoia sinks into an individual’s mind when something is not fully secured. Some people even own a vault where they place their most treasured things and keep the number combination by themselves.

It is the same story when it comes to people’s most valued cars. Majority of the cars are fruits of someone’s labor. It is a product of almost a life-long sacrifice of saving. That is why a garage is a must.

A garage, for some, is considered the main entrance of the house. It is the haven of everyone’s automobiles. It serves to protect the cars from the heavy rain and the scorching heat of the sun. At the same time, it keeps the intruders away.

Since the garage is a vital space of the house, it needs to be well taken cared for. The most common problem with garages is mainly on its door. There are lot mechanisms of the door that it becomes prone to damage. There are push button doors which just automatically swing or slide to open. The specific problem usually encountered is on the screws and the bolts. There are times that it can just be fixed by the person concerned but without mechanical background it might not function again.

When damage occurs and you need garage door repair in Colorado Springs, consider hiring a professional instead of attempting the job yourself.  Some of the doors might already produce a squeaking sound upon opening or might just open halfway. Such problems are big hassles. The services typically offered are quality guaranteed and based from testimonials, will last many years.

I Learned How Fun Dancing Is

Posted in Performing Arts on December 17th, 2009

I grew up in a neighborhood that was pretty traditional.  The men had their roles, and the women had their roles.  The men worked, and the women stayed at home with the kids.  There were no business owners, only employees.  If there was one thing that men did not do, it was certainly dancing.  The thought never crossed my mind.

A couple semesters into my university studies, a good friend of mine and I went on a double date together.  We ended up going to a dance, but in my naivety I just figured we would watch or waddle around.  As it happened, my friend and his date knew how to swing dance and they taught my date and I some moves.  The best part about it was that we had a blast.

The next semester I enrolled in a social dance class taught at the university. I was not very good at the beginning but I got better.  The next semester I took another dance class, followed by another, and another.  In total, I think I took seven dance classes until I graduated.  My favorite is Latin dance, although my hips do not quite move like they are supposed to.  When I got married, my wife and I enrolled in dancing lessons in Ashburn VA and have had a lot of fun.

For those guys like me who thought dancing is sissy stuff, I will agree and disagree.  There is still a lot of dancing that is sissy stuff, however, the type of dancing where you get to dance with a partner is a heck of a lot of fun, and nothing sissy about it.

Fiberglass: A Versatile Material

Posted in Building and Remodeling on December 17th, 2009

In the small ranch-style 1970s era home that I grew up in, there was small covered carport on the north side of the home that my parents decided to turn into a garage when I was about three.  My dad decided to embark on the project on his own, with the occasional help of a few friendly neighbors with some skill with a hammer. As my dad worked on the project there would be pallets of fiberglass insulation here and there.  I was very young but I still remember the piles of bright pink fluffy material.

Even after all these years, people are still using fiberglass as a material for insulation because fiberglass has a high surface area to weight ratio, high strength, and low cost.  As the name would suggest, fiberglass is a material made from very thin fibers of glass.  It can be used in a wide variety of uses including thermal insulation for homes, electrical insulation, high-strength fabrics, auto bodies, surfboards, and grating.  Fiberglass is an especially popular alternate material for metal gratings because of its lightweight properties and corrosion resistance.  These properties make fiberglass an ideal material for applications where water is a factor, such as offshore oilrigs, ships, water treatment facilities, and water parks.

If you are a resident of the Lone Star State and have an interest in fiberglass gratings in Houston, Texas, EPI can help.  EPI is a manufacture representative firm on the Gulf Coast specializing in equipment for the marine and petrochemical industries, particularly fiberglass gratings.
