What is Californiaâs Title24?
Posted in Logistics on May 6th, 2011Title 24, Part 6, of the California Code of Regulations is California’s Energy Efficiency Standards for both Residential and Nonresidential buildings.
A Brief History
Title24 was established in 1978 when President Carter expressed concern for our nation’s excessive energy consumption. Since its adoption in 1978, Title24 has saved more than $56 billion in electricity and natural gas costs. It is regularly updated in order to take advantage of the latest energy efficiency technology. By 2013, it’s estimated another $23 billion in energy costs could be saved as a result of Title24.
Areas of Regulation
In an effort to conserve energy and ensure a stable future for our nation, California’s Title24 outlines acceptable guidelines and procedures for energy efficiency in these areas:
- Plan Check & Inspection
- Building Envelope
- HVAC
- Water Heating
- Lighting
- Renewable Energy
Compliance
Abiding by the policies set forth by Title24 can be tough to do on your own. Since it was first enacted, energy consulting firms have cropped up to help ensure any residential or nonresidential building can adapt compliance with confidence.
Some of these firms have been at it since the beginning, allowing them to offer the most seasoned advice available.
Why is Title24 Important?
In the short term, you’ll have a very hard time performing any kind of construction without awareness of Title24 and the guidelines it has established. You may be subjected to some hefty penalties and fees if you’re found to be in violation of Title24.
Title24’s long-term importance is to ensure stable energy usage and supply for future generations. The development and implementation of advanced energy conservation or generation technology is also hastened by Title24. California is seen by many as the green energy leaders of the United States.
Seek Consultation
If you’re planning a construction project or major renovation in the state of California, be sure to seek expert help. When looking for an energy consultation firm to meet your needs, look for these things:
- Experience: How long have they been around?
- Certifications: Are they qualified to give advice on Title24 regulation compliance? Are they really experts?
- Local Focus: Are they a national or local consulting firm? Regulations differ from state to state as well as county to county and city to city. The more local knowledge they have, the better off you are.
Always ask for credentials and references when seeking energy consultation for Title24 regulations.
