Limousine 101: The Ins and Outs of Limo Etiquette for Teenagers

If you plan on hiring a limo service in Monterey or anywhere else for your northern California homecoming dance, prom, or other big event, it is important to know some of the ins and outs of limousine etiquette. You must remember that although you have hired the car for the evening, it is not yours: it belongs to the limo company, and it will need to carry other passengers the very next day.

1. You are expected to behave in an orderly fashion

Because a limo holds up to 10 extremely comfortably, it does feel as if you are sitting in a living room on wheels. However, this “living room” also has a chauffeur up front whose job it is to stay safely on the road. Engaging in super rowdy behavior is not only rude, but it can also be downright dangerous because it will distract the driver. The limo company will reserve the right to expel anyone from its car who is out of control, damaging property, or behaving dangerously. No matter what you’ve seen in movies, standing up through the sunroof is not allowed nor is it appropriate behavior!

2. Do not drink

If you are underage and choose to drink while in the limo, the driver has the right to stop the ride right then and there without issuing a refund for all that money you paid. California law is extremely strict regarding underage drinking, and limo companies are extra careful to make sure that they are in compliance.

3. Be kind to your chauffeur

Most limo services will allow you to bring your own music CDs, but be kind to your chauffeur and don’t complain if he wants to put the privacy window up! He is your escort for the evening and should always be treated with the utmost respect. It is customary to pay a driver a 15% to 20% tip based on the cost of your ride. It should be given to him in cash, in a sealed envelope and you should give it to him right after your ride is over.
