Photos of Another Time

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. That must be what they meant when you capture a glimpse of a photo that for one reason or another, you become frozen or locked in time as your gaze upon it turns into a stare. You then begin not only to look, but to feel. Memories or perhaps fantasies step into your grasp, surrounding you with their presence. Yes, I think that is what they might have meant.

Have you ever looked at a photo you have never seen before but yet it captures you and takes you into its world as if you have already been there once? It’s fascinating how a simple image can do that to the human mind. I admit that happened to me as I browsed old New York City photos by Bill White. I looked at photos of Grand Central Station in the 1940’s and although I did not live through that time period, I could almost sense what it was like, how the people talked and dressed, and how I would have looked if it were me in that photo.

Bill White photographs the places of a historic New York City as well as the faces and moments in time. His photos can never be replaced because pre World War II photos of New York City can no longer be taken. In his photography, Bill White captures the rich culture of what once was. His photos are remarkable when compared to the modern day images in our minds. From the infamous Empire State building to the Altman Fashion Show and Grand Central Station, Bill White’s intriguing photos are sure to take you into a time you can’t experience anymore. Sit back, gaze, imagine and be inspired.
