Living on the “Maine” Land
I saw a movie recently where a family gathers at the home of their parents for a reunion of sorts, all while outside forces are attempting to wreak havoc and mayhem. The movie was funny and left me feeling good when I left the theater, but perhaps the most appealing part of the film was the setting – a log home in New England with tall evergreens surrounding a vast mountain range.
I realized, upon pondering the movie, that that is where I want to live. I want to find a small fishing village in Maine and settle in amongst the trees and go to town once a week for milk and bread, donning a sweater and knitted cap. I could write during the winter, and watch Red Sox games during the summer.
Looking for land in Maine is much easier now, thanks to the advent of the internet. Additionally, property in Maine is reasonably priced and, unlike Massachusetts and Rhode Island, is fairly available. The aforementioned states are either too small, or too urban to present the picturesque atmosphere that I have envisioned.
When shopping around for land for sale in Maine, the old adage is as important as ever – location, location, location. Who wants to be stuck with a suburban home that was built in the 30’s with 7 previous owners? Not I. Who wants to overpay for a remote piece of property so far away from anyone, that your car could break down and you would never be discovered? Again, count me out.
