Stainless Steel Touches Every Aspect of Our Lives

Stainless steel is an alloy that is a top choice in domestic and industrial appliances because it does not corrode, stain or rust as easily as regular steel. Stainless steel is non-toxic, in addition to being zinc and lead-free. It’s a perfect metal for domestic use in surgical instruments, cookware, cutlery, hardware, major appliances, industrial, automotive, construction and aerospace applications.

Stainless steel is easy to clean, will not chip, fade or crack. Stainless steel is also recyclable and basically lasts a lifetime. Considering these factors about stainless steel, it is a cost effective option over other product uses for applications needing strength, antibacterial features and longevity.

The alloy contains 11% chromium and includes iron ore, silicon, carbon, nickel, manganese and nitrogen in the smelting process and eventually rolled into stainless steel sheets as a main method for use. The process of making stainless steel sheets is highly monitored to generate the correct temperatures for strength and low fracture toughness.

The earliest application for stainless steel dates back to 400 AD as a search for develop a non-corrosive metal began. By the 1800’s the search continued to find a non-corrosive metal for swords and wartime applications. As the alloy was refined, it was used for storage tanks for breweries throughout Europe. By the early 1900’s, stainless steel alloy was adopted and patented in the U.S. and used for gun barrels and was eventually introduced into automotive, aeronautical and medical industries.

When you think about it, stainless steel surrounds us in our everyday lives. Look around and you will see how stainless steel enhances the quality of our lives.
